songs of the day jan 26.

ok so this is the last post before i leave...unless i suddenly get inspired.

foxy brown- the quan
am i the only one who missed fox boogie?! i bet not. this is my joint. makes me wind my hips and blow kisses at the boyz. the beat is simple but definitely dancefloor-worthy.

the moments- sexy mama
who sampled it? if you like hip hop you might have heard the track. i'll give u a hint: the group was 3 dudes and a chick. a man from cali sampled it. anyway, i love this song. so sexy, so soulful. makes me wanna wear a red jumpsuit and dance with cletus.

deep purple- smoke on the water

you just can't go wrong with deep purple, or this classic track. *sigh*

vacation.

art kid is going on a little vacation until february 4th. i'll be in dc, nyc, and philly.
i'm not taking my laptop on purpose.
i'm leaving my current script. (that's a lie)
i'm going equipped with my clothes, ipod, and charm.
catch me around.
trust me, i'll come back with goodies.

love.
-art kid.

songs of the day jan 25.

j dilla- the new

one of my favorite dilla tracks off his "donuts" album. the entire album is good but the new really makes me break my neck. one of the greatest to ever do it. if u don't have donuts, go get it.

caural- i won't race you

i really dig caural. melodies, soft whispers of words, and the ability to make your booty shake. this one in particular makes me feel like i'm in a lounge in london flirting with some bri-ish (british) fellow saying "Oi!". dope track.

stereolab- des etoiles electronique

we all know stereolab is one of my all time fave groups....right up there with soft machine and led zepp, but they always bring the noise. in a good way. this soft song is perfect for lounging in a pool. they have melodies you couldn't even think of. good thing i know some french. i love this song.

paris baby.

reminiscent of the techniques used for my upcoming short film, "Le Moderne Femme Transplants". Dig it.
If I had personal access to all of these feathers and fluff and such, I'd be the happiest girl at the ball.
Dig those nails, dig those nailssss!!!

(photos courtesy of Vogue UK)

i love haute couture. if i could drink fine wines, sail on the seas, and wear fabulous haute couture get-ups for the rest of my life while in the company of a fine man named gilles, i would.

truly.

these are from dior's latest haute couture collection...just a taste of it. more updates to come on the haute couture season, including men's. secret: I LOVE MEN'S FASHION!!! now i'm not the kind of girl to tell a man what to wear. BUT meeting a man who could easily fall in love with great cuts, scrumptious fabrics, sleek shoes, and a perfectly stylish carry-on bag....*sigh*.

songs of the day jan 24.

lil kim- queen bitch

*one of my fave kim songs. she spits hot shit (thanks to biggie). this is one of those songs i listen to when i need to get pumped up and gussied up. you know how i like to get gussied.

the doors- touch me

the doors are classic. jim morrison was a sexy heap of a mess and his voice would've made me take off my clothes 30 years ago. the drum build up is the best part of the song. short n sweet.

diverse- time

i remember a time in my life when songs that had this uber chill hip hop vibe ruled my collection. something to just zone out to. i copped the urban renewal compilation just off the strength of the cover from more dusty than digital (atlanta misses u)...and i found this gem by diverse. was it really 6 years ago?! damn.

too young. too soon.

HEATH LEDGER

BRAD RENFRO

this post is dedicated to two men who lost their lives this month...brad renfro (25) and heath ledger (28). it hurts me especially because as an upcoming filmmaker, these were two talented gentlemen i desperately wanted to work with. right up there with tom hanks, bill murray, robert downey jr, and paul reubens. the thing i particularly liked about renfro and ledger is that they were THEMSELVES. they carved out their careers on their own terms. yes, brad had his troubles with the law and drugs, but he was a gritty, organic soul of an actor. heath wasn't trying to get crazy paid in hollywood. if the film he appeared in jumped off, then cool. my thing is this: i love actors who think and go outside of the box with choosing their roles. i feel as if i identify with them in the respect of shunning the over-the-top, phony glitz of hollywood for a more subdued creative outlook on life and my craft. they always inspired me. from renfro's performances in "bully", "the client" and "apt pupil". to heath's in "i'm not there" and "brokeback mountain"...even "candy".
my heart truly hurts, and i'm sure their respective families feel it the most. it's been a sad month, but we've gotta trudge on. for the sake of life, and for the sake of film as an artform. now, more than ever, it's time to live and love.

songs of the day jan 22.

broadcast- echo's answer

* i got excited about this song the first time i heard it b/c i could see it in a film i wrote. it fits perfectly. she has a sweet voice, similar to charlotte gainsbourg, and the melody is freeing in a sense. hmmm. good tune.

joy division- she's lost control

*one of their hits of course, but a great song nonetheless. a voice so haunting and manly. a voice so troubled by his own inner turmoil.

cee-lo- damn

*a good beat that reminds me of the essence of ATL. we thrive on bass in trunks. and he of course spits deliciously over the beat.

more about slovenia.

So apparently the average age in Ljubljana is just over 30. The city is chock full of art (sweet!) and culture. They have over 10,000 cultural events every year. i won't talk much about this cool little city so i'll let the photos do it for me. now i'm kinda excited. also peep the article in monocle magazine (my fave) about this city. and yes, those are the alps!

songs of the day jan 21.

jimi hendrix- have you ever been (to electric ladyland)

*i love this song because it's that soulful melodic rock when he really breaks it down on the guitar. jimi had a pretty good voice too. it's short and sweet, and it's a classic.

busta rhymes- take it off

*now i haven't heard this in years (literally), and it's off ELE, and as soon as i heard it my hiney was shakin. at the next busta concert i go to, i wanna hear this. a groovy island....groove.

the lettermen- hurt so bad

*three chipper looking dudes on capitol records i believe. this song is pretty short too, but the harmony is infectious. you can't help but sing along, even if it doesn't hurt so bad. they did a lot of covers, and it's all good, but they won me over with this one.

new locations, baby.

so since my location and home will be changing within the next five months, i must inject my life with some culture from the future homefront. so it's either Ljubljana, Slovenia OR Sao Paulo, Brazil (bdah-zee-oh is how it's sexily pronounced thanks to my portuguese instruction). i'm really rooting for sao paulo of course (can you say hotties?!), but if mom has to go to slovenia for a year, i'm down for the cause. now i'm not sayin art kid is stayin for a full year, but i'll be there for some months. anywho, here's some slovene early modernism for you. it's by rihard jakopic and it's titled "evening on the sava river".

pharoahe monch meets scion.

hey kiddies, if you're in the atlanta area this wednesday night, check out a free show given by scion (of course)...pharoahe monch is performing along with Orgone, and DJ Eleven. Nobody can argue with a free show, and can you really argue with hip-hop? I think not. Check it out. You just may see me there. I'll be the chick coolin it on the sidelines, probably wearing a seemingly odd but stylish combo.

be kind rewind.

this is a movie i've been actively waiting for. it's michel gondry's latest endeavor starring mos def as Mike, and jack black as Jerry, it's making it's humble debut at sundance. the premise of the story if you haven't heard is like this. the two work at a vhs-only rental store, some catastrophe happens that wipes out some of the tapes, and the two (black and def) decide to recreate the film favorites....all while telling the clientele the films are swedish imports. luckily for them, everyone digs the new versions.

now if you've seen gondry's past work (eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, the science of sleep, human nature, etc.) you know his vision as a filmmaker is pretty dreamy and rock solid. he's one of my favorite directors, up there with godard and kubrick, in that they create complete worlds within each film. he sucks you in and once the film is over, you find yourself floating around in a worls similar to his, only you're the star in this one....or is that just me?

danny glover co-stars in this comedic masterpiece.

Manned Cloud.

this concept clearly has be buggin out.

Manned Cloud, the latest from French designer Jean-Marie Massaud, aims to be the world's first luxury hotel in the sky.

The double-decker carrier can travel 5,000 consecutive km, and is able to accommodate 40 guests (and 15 staff members) in its 1,100 sq. meter space. Developed with ONERA, the French national aerospace research body, Manned Cloud gives the jetsettiest of world travelers the opportunity to "explore the world without a trace: to re-experience travelling, timelessness and enhance the consciousness of the beauty of the world - and to experience spectacular and exotic places without being intrusive or exploitative" (save for the energy used to fly the thing). The flying hotel includes a restaurant and bar, lounge, library, fitness center, 20 rooms and terrace.

jack has done it again.

peep the manifesto.
music heads, listen up.
music fiends, listen up.
music makers, listen up.
it's time.
